PSORIASIS
Psoriasis
Description
Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune disease that appears on the skin. It occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis is not contagious and comes in many forms, the most common of which (plaque psoriasis) is commonly seen as red and white hues of scaly patches appearing on the top first layer of the skin.
Appearance
- Plaque most frequently occurs on the skin of the elbows and knees, typically on the outside of the joint
- Can affect any area, including the scalp, palms of the hands and soles of the feet and genitals
- The disorder is a chronic recurring condition that varies in severity from minor localized patches to complete body coverage.
- Fingernails and toenails are frequently affected (psoriatic nail dystrophy) and can be seen as an isolated symptom.
- Psoriasis can also cause inflammation of the joints, which is known as psoriatic arthritis.
Symptoms
- Extreme scaling, itchiness and dryness
- Flaky dandruff-like look and significant redness can cause great embarrassment and emotional stress
- Individuals may experience significant physical discomfort, depending on the severity and location of outbreaks
- Itching and pain can interfere with certain basic physical functions and limit mobility and the ability to work in certain occupations
- Plaque on the scalp can be particularly embarrassing, as flaky plaque in the hair can be mistaken for dandruff
Treatment
Treatments range from medication and various topical treatments (bath solutions, moisturizer and mineral oils) to phototherapy and new biological medication.
ATOPIC DERMATITIS
Atopic Dermatitis
Description
The most common form of the skin disorder known as eczema, characterized by areas of severe itching, redness,
scaling, and loss of the surface of the skin, typically affects young children on the face and extensor surfaces of the arms and legs (elbow and knee sides) Older children and adults are usually affected on the sides of the neck and on the inside of the elbow and knee Frequently associated with other atopic (allergic) disorders, especially asthma and allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
Appearance
- Most often affects infants and young children
- In some instances, it may persist into adulthood or actually first show up later in life
- A large number of patients tend to have a long-term course with various flare-ups and remissions
- Many children enter into a permanent remission phase when they get older, although their skin may remain
somewhat dry and easily irritated
Symptoms
- Dry skin is a very common complaint and an underlying cause of some of the typical rash symptoms
- Skin becomes extremely itchy and inflamed, causing redness, swelling, cracking, weeping, crusting,
and scaling - When the rash has been present over a prolonged period, chronic changes may occur due to the constant
scratching and rubbing
Treatment
- Moisturizing skin frequently can be very beneficial. Short lukewarm baths with the addition of emulsifying oils are recommended. Let the body dry naturally after bathing
- Apply an emollient all over the body while still wet, to seal in moisture and allow water to be absorbed through the skin stratum
- Topical steroids (hydrocortisone) in ointment form are currently the preferred treatment and are known to produce favourable responses. Steroids should be discontinued when lesions disappear and resumed when new patches arise.
- Immunomodulators – natural or synthetic substances that help regulate or normalize the immune system – have also been found to be effective
- Ultraviolet light therapy
- Soft, pure cotton fabrics are non-irritating and are recommended attire for sufferers of atopic dermatitis.
Clothes should be washed in mild detergents only.
ECZEMA
Eczema
Description
Eczema is a form of dermatitis or inflammation of the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). The term is broadly applied to a range of persistent skin conditions. Can affect any region of the body, but most often impacts the inside of the forearms, as well as the hands and feet
Appearance
- Depending on the type of eczema and the individual’s reaction, the disorder manifests itself in a variety of ways,
at times appearing red, dry or scaly and at times appearing as a blistering lesion - Areas of temporary skin discoloration may appear and are sometimes due to healed injuries
- Scratching open a healing lesion may result in scarring and may enlarge the rash
Symptoms
- Eczematic symptoms commonly include itchy, reddened, and dry skin; skin oedema (swelling); crusting, flaking,
and cracking; blistering, oozing and bleeding - Cracking and weeping of the skin may also occur and open sores may become infected
- Environmental causes of the condition may include exposure to dryness, soaps and detergents, cleaning products,
rubber gloves and even cosmetic lotions and creams - Itchiness often encourages prolonged scratching which in turn leads to reddened, irritated, scaling skin or even
a leathery thickening of the skin
Treatment
- Recommended treatments are always based upon an individual’s age, overall health status, and the type and
severity of the condition - Keeping the skin well hydrated through the application of creams or ointments (with a low water and high oil content) as well as avoiding over-bathing is an important step in treatment
- Corticosteroid creams are sometimes prescribed to decrease the inflammatory reaction in the skin,
according to severity of the symptoms - For severe itching, oral antihistamines may be prescribed
- In order to control an acute outbreak of eczema, oral corticosteroids may be prescribed, although their long-term use is discouraged
- Ultraviolet light therapy
SEBORRHEA
Seborrhea
Description
Seborrhea is an inflammatory skin disorder affecting the scalp, face, and body causing scaly, flaky, itchy and red skin. It particularly affects the sebum-gland-rich areas of skin. May be aggravated by illness, psychological stress, fatigue, change of season and reduced general health. Can cause discomfort and interfere in one’s daily activities
Appearance
- Seborrhea may occur anywhere on facial skin, behind the ears and in areas where the skin folds
- Can appear near the eyelashes, on the forehead, or around the sides of the nose
- In adolescents and adults, seborrhea can take the form of scalp scaling (dandruff) or as mild to
extreme redness of the skin folds running down either side of the face from the corners of the nose
to the mouth (commonly known as “smile lines”) - Other body areas where symptoms occur are the chest and upper back
Symptoms
- Some affected areas become red and flaky
- Commonly, patients experience mild redness, skin lesions and in some cases hair loss
- Other symptoms include patchy scaling or thick crusts on the scalp, red, greasy skin covered with
flaky white or yellow scales, itching, soreness and yellow or white scales that may attach to the hair shaft. - Many patients experience alternating periods of the symptoms, when they either improve or suddenly
worsen. In adults, symptoms may last from few weeks to even years
Treatment
Dermatologists recommend topical treatments such as shampoos, cleansers or creams/lotions that
contain antifungal, anti-inflammatory, sebo-suppressive or keratolytic ingredients.
DIABETIC FOOT
Diabetic Foot
Description
Diabetes is a chronic disease, that damages a variety of body systems and functions, such as blood pressure and insulin production, and holds potentially serious consequences for the skin as well. People with diabetes are at risk of nerve damage (neuropathy) and problems with the blood supply to their feet (ischaemia). Consequently, sensitivity in the surface of the skin becomes impaired, leaving diabetics prone to injuries they may not feel. Left unchecked, wounds can quickly deteriorate into ulcers and even lead to the necessity for limb amputations. It is therefore important to keep the skin of the feet whole and to prevent the appearance of cracks that may serve as a point of entry to infections and cause deterioration and complications
Symptoms
- Vulnerability to accelerated and excessive dryness resulting from skin barrier dysfunction
- Severe crackingthat reaches chronic proportions due to lack of preventative hydration treatment
- Bleeding cracks, resulting from the scratching of itchy skin
- Cuts, lesions and other wounds on the foot that become chronic and ulcerated and do not undergo
a natural healing process
Treatment
- One of the primary prevention protocols for controlling diabetic symptoms is ongoing foot healthcare
- Nails need to be properly trimmed and callused skin removed
- Feet should be thoroughly moisturized daily to prevent the development of ulcers
a natural healing process
